研究内容
Many biomaterials consist of hierarchical, composite structures. The result of this composite design is that biomaterials possess complex physical properties that cannot be achieved with simple materials. Our goal is to make use of the vast landscape of tough materials developed over the last 25 years and apply them to composite designs to create new materials that are specially designed for unique applications. Current research includes 1) woven-fabric reinforced hydrogel composites with extreme toughness, 2) 3D printing-based macroscale double network composites, and 3) “vascular” (channel containing) hydrogels and elastomers for self-healing and muscle-like actuation. By combining advanced materials within composite designs, we have developed new methods to create tailored composites for advanced healthcare and industrial applications.
