A research group led by Yuya Ohki, a second-year master’s student in the Department of Soft Matter, Graduate School of Life Sciences, Hokkaido University, and Assistant Professor Takashi Tsukamoto of the Faculty of Advanced Life Sciences, Hokkaido University, has revealed that the full-length anion channel rhodopsin preferentially transports nitrate ions and part of its mechanism. They also suggested that the function of preferential transport of nitrate ions may help the host organism (marine algae) to acquire nitrogen sources.
