For the first time, elucidating transition mechanism of the intestinal microbiota due to immunosenescence.

Study elucidated that secreted α-defensin from Paneth cells in the small intestine is lower in the elderly people than the middle-aged and involved in changes of the intestinal microbiota with aging. Further it showed previously unknown immunosenescence, which may contribute to maintaining health.
