This summer, the Global Station for Soft Matter, GI-CoRE, Hokkaido University will hold “Summer School on Soft Matter” for graduate students and early career researchers. This is a two-week summer program focusing on polymer physics, soft matter mechanics, and chemistry and characterization of materials. The first session will be held at Otaki Seminar House in central Hokkaido, located about 20 km from the Lake Toya where the G8 Summit took place in 2008. The second session will be held at the Sapporo Campus of Hokkaido University. The lecturers are world-leading scientists in the field of soft matter. (flyer

This summer school is organized by Global Station for Soft Matter (GSS), Global Institution for Collaborative Research and Education (GI-CoRE), Hokkaido University. GSS was established in April 2016 to further the progressive development of soft matter research. Serving as an international research hub, in collaboration with ESPCI ParisTech and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and so forth, GSS aims to provide one of the most innovative platforms of soft matter research and education in the world. By the initiative of GSS, a new division, “Division of Soft Matter” is planned to be established in the Graduate School of Life Science, Hokkaido University, starting from 2018. The Division of Soft Matter intends to produce multidisciplinary graduates of science and engineering. Ahead of the starting of the new division, the international faculty of GSS will organize the summer school, inviting world-renowned international instructors in the field of soft matter to give a series of lectures. Having a cooperation with Hokkaido Summer Institute, we offer this course as an advanced graduate course of Graduate School of Life Science and an inter-graduate school course, Hokkaido University. Taking this opportunity, we will host a soft matter symposium “International Symposium on Advanced Soft Matter: From Single Molecule to Tough Polymers” to widely share our summer school instructors’ expertise, knowledge, and cutting-edge results of soft matter science and tough polymers. Hokkaido Summer Institute for Students
Outline
The aim of this summer school is to provide graduate students with fundamental education on Soft Matter Science. The course program consists of two sessions: the first session will be held at Otaki Seminar House. The second session will be held at Hokkaido University Sapporo Campus. Both sessions will consist of series of lectures and practical sessions. To earn credit, students must take all the lectures of Lecture #1 to #32, a student poster session, and two oral presentation sessions (shown in pink in the schedule above).
As one of the optional activities, the second session will contain laboratory tours of our advanced facilities on Hokkaido University campus. The tour details will be announced in due course.
We will not have classes in the afternoon on Monday, August 7 and Tuesday, August 8 due to an international symposium which most of the summer school lecturers will take part in. The Summer School participants are all welcome to attend the symposium. Although it is not a course requirement to attend the symposium, you have a chance to make a poster presentation and are strongly encouraged to make a poster presentation at the symposium. You may present the poster that you will use for the Student Poster Session in the first week, but of course you may make another new poster for the symposium. Lecture Materials and Presentations
<Lecture Materials> All the summer school participants will be provided with an ID # and password for Nitobe Portfolio (Hokkaido University’s web-based learning support system) to download the lecture materials. We will inform your ID and Password in early July by e-mail. Once you receive the email, complete the initial set-up immediately. Please make sure to check the site well in advance, print out all the materials, and bring them with you. You should be aware that dates for certain lecture materials could change or new lecture materials could be added during the Summer School period. Therefore, please bring your laptop computer, i-Pad, or any other mobile device to check the Nitobe Portfolio page often for updates.
<Student Sound Bites and Poster Presentations> In the poster presentation on Monday – Tuesday, July 31 – August 1, you are expected to explain your research topic (including relevant background, important results, and main conclusion). There are no poster size restrictions. The poster can be horizontal or vertical – whatever you prefer. Please note that you are required to tape the poster on the wall in the presentation site (gym) by 7:30 pm on July 31. Adhesive tape will be provided. Before the poster presentation, each student is expected to give a small one-minute speech to introduce yourself (name, school, country, research, hobbies/interests, and so on) at the lecture room. Please send a PDF slide of the one-minute speech through the Nitobe Portfolio by the middle of July. Please be sure to label your file with your poster number and your name. For example, 01_Joe_Smith.pdf.
<Students Presentations of Projects> The presentations will take place on Friday, August 11. At the beginning of the course, all the students will be divided into groups, and each group will be assigned a small project by drawing lots. The students will discuss and present their project at the presentation session based on the knowledge learned from the course. Evaluation will be based on the presentations and discussions. [Group Discussion] In Otaki Seminar House, students can use the dining hall as a place for group discussion every evening after the last lecture (fruits and refreshments will be served). In Hokkaido University, we have reserved the foyer and the lecture room on the first floor in the Frontier Research in Applied Sciences Building (FCC Bldg) and the Institute for International Collaboration (IIC) Building Lecture Rooms #2019 and #111 for Wednesday – Thursday, August 9 – 10. The building door will be locked after 6:30 p.m. on August 9, and 6 p.m. on August 10. (Due to facilities maintenance, the FCC Bldg will be unavailable after 5 p.m. on August 10.) August 11 is a Japanese public holiday “Mountain Day” and FCC Bldg and IIC Bldg will be closed. You can use the foyer at Faculty of Advanced Life Science Bldg #2, located next to Bldg #7 connected by a skyway, for group discussion on Friday, August 11.

<Activity fees (optional)> ¥2,930 ~ ¥3,220 Please pay on July 30 at the meeting point (when you get on the bus heading to Otaki Village) when participating in any of the activities in Otaki Village and surrounding areas.
<Lodging & meals at Otaki> All students stay on-site. Students receive their room assignment on the day of check-in. Total fees are ¥15,120 (6 nights including meals) per person. The Otaki Seminar House has bunk bed rooms for six to eight and “tatami” rooms for three to four. The rate is ¥150 (per night/person) (modified). Breakfast ¥620 / Lunch ¥620 / Dinner ¥1130. Cancellation Policy: No refund is possible. Please pay onsite (when you get on the bus heading to Otaki Village).
<Accommodation at Sapporo> ¥30,000 ~ ¥70,000 Accommodation fee varies, depending on the accommodations. In Sapporo, no meals are offered from the Summer School except at the Farewell to be held on August 11. For international students, all of you are assigned to International House Fushimi, located 4-min walk from a street car station “Nishisen juyo jo” (about 20-min ride from “Nishi yon chome” Station near Odori Park). International Soft Matter Summer School in Hokkaido 2017 for Young Researchers

Course Aim
The aim of this summer school is to provide early career researchers with a fundamental education on soft matter sciences, and to build an international network of young career researchers working in the field of soft matter science. You are strongly expected to participate in the evening presentation sessions for networking. As this course is offered as a part of the Hokkaido Summer Institute program, participating young researchers are expected to play a role as a mentor to help participating students. Outdoor Activities and Events
[Otaki Area] On July 30th, on our way to Otaki Village, we will stop off at the Toya Caldera and Usu Volcano UNESCO Global Geopark on July 30 to have lunch and enjoy the Geopark. You may bring your lunch box or eat at a restaurant. There are many restaurants and souvenir shops near the ropeway on Mt. Usu. On August 3rd, you can either participate in Nordic Walking or the boat cruise. You can enjoy shopping at a roadside station “Michi-no-eki Aputa” on our way from Lake Toya back to Otaki Village. For how to sign up, click here and download the survey form (MS Excel). Send us the filled form by Tuesday, June 6 as e-mail attachment. For the activities, you cannot sign-up after June 6. You may cancel on the day or change the choice if you have to do so. Please note that the Summer School does not provide insurance. How to get to the Sapporo Campus of Hokkaido University
New Chitose Airport is the nearest international airport, 60km south of downtown Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan. (Hokkaido Univ Campus Access Map

JR Line JR Hokkaido operates train services from the airport every 15 minutes during the daytime. The JR New Chitose Airport Station is located on the first basement level of the domestic terminal building. The JR Sapporo Station is a 5-minute walk from the Hokkaido University main gate.
Buses Take a bus to downtown Sapporo. The bus stops are located on the arrivals level of the domestic terminal building (bus stop #14 and #22) and the international terminal building (#65).
Taxi services Take a taxi to downtown Sapporo. The taxi stands are located on the arrivals level of the domestic terminal building (#11 and #17) and the international terminal building (#64). The cost of a taxi is often approximately ¥10,000.

Traveling to Otaki Seminar House
Complimentary bus transportation Complimentary bus transportation will be available between Sapporo and Otaki on July 30 and August 5. (bus timetable
| return bus route) The bus will depart from Hokkaido University, Clark Memorial Student Center at 10 a.m. on July 30. Meet at the departure point by 9:30 a.m. and complete the Summer School registration there. Please get a name tag with an assigned bus number, provided in a Summer School bag along with a notebook, a pen, and uchiwa (a round hand fan) . For HU International House Fushimi residents, we will pick you up at the House and take you to the Clark Memorial Student Center. Meet in front of the dormitory manager’s office at 8:50 a.m. and get on the bus #3 which will depart from the dormitory at 9 a.m.JR Line Take the limited express “Super Hokuto” from the JR Sapporo Station and get off at the JR Muroran-honsen Line Datemonbetsu Station (one way ¥5,490 with a seat reservation fee included). On Sunday, our staff will be waiting at the station from 4:20 p.m. to pick you up and will depart around 4:30 p.m. Please note that if you want to use the service, you must make a reservation in advance and make sure to arrive before 4:30 p.m. (Take the limited express Super Hokuto #14 or Super Hokuto #16.) Get off at Kita Yuzawa Onsen stop (5-minute walk to Horohoro Sanso) or Shiraginu-no-toko (7-mintue walk to Hotel Daini Meisuitei).Hotel shuttle bus For those who will arrive late and cannot make the complimentary bus transportation, Horohoro Sanso and Hotel Daini Meisuitei run shuttle bus to/from the JR Sapporo Station (free of charge), and to/from New Chitose International Airport (one way ¥1,000) for their guests on a first-come, first-served basis. Otaki Seminar House Otaki Seminar House has lodging facilities. All the summer school students will stay at the Otaki Seminar House during the first session. Students will receive their room assignment on the day of check-in. The seminar house has a large and a smaller hot spring communal bathroom (open 7 am – 9 am and 3 pm – 9 pm). [Laundry Facilities] One clothes dryer and one washing machine are available on the 2nd floor. Laundry detergents will be provided. [Amenities] Home slippers, Two-in-one shampoo, Body soap. Hair dryer (Each bathhouse has one). [Other Facilities] gym, sports ground, communal fridge and microwave.
Hotel Daini Meisuitei (Mori no Soraniwa) (5-minute drive from the seminar house) Guest rooms are equipped with TV, refrigerator, phone, in-room safe, electric pot, tea set, air-conditioning, bathroom, and bathtub.
