Overview of Research and Education

Soft materials that exist all around us—includes substances like jelly, cream, rubber, sponge, and even the biological tissues that make up our bodies. These materials possess unique properties that combine characteristics of both solids and liquids, and they respond sensitively to various stimuli and environmental changes.

Our laboratory aims to understand, control, integrate, and apply the structure and functions of such soft matter. In particular, soft materials with high biocompatibility are of great importance for applications in the medical and healthcare fields. They are attracting attention as essential materials for the development of next-generation biomaterials, including artificial tissues, regenerative medicine, flexible sensors, and actuators.

In designing these functional soft materials, we also focus on utilizing natural polymers, bioceramics, and other biological resources. Rather than simply synthesizing materials from natural substances, we strive to create novel soft materials of natural origin that fully harness the intrinsic properties and individuality of those natural components.
