Soft Matter Collaborative Research Unit (SMCR), Frontier Research Center for Advanced Material and Life Science, Faculty of Advanced Life Science 2021-
Since its establishment in April 2016 in Faculty of Advanced Life Science, the Global Station for Soft Matter of the Global Institution for Collaborative Research and Education (GSS-GI-CoRE) has operated as an organization under the direct control of the President of Hokkaido University. In 2018, The Graduate School of Life Science a has formally established the Division of Soft Matte which is a development stemming from GSS-GI-CoRE. The Division of Soft Matter has promoted persistent developments of young researchers as the first division of Soft Matter in Japan. The GSS received a S evaluation, which is the highest evaluation, at the external evaluation committee in 2020.
As of April 1st, 2021, however, the GSS has transitioned into Soft Matter Collaborative Research Unit (SMCR), Frontier Research Center for Advanced Material and Life Science, Faculty of Advanced Life Science. We will make contributions to further promote and develop international collaborative research and education in cooperation with GI-CoRE as a “GI-CoRE Cooperating Hub”.

Research Project:“Design of Low Entropy Polymer Network Materials for Unique Functions”
Principal Investigator:Professor Jian Ping Gong (Faculty of Advanced Life Science, WPI-ICReDD, Hokkaido University)
A long-term international cooperative project for soft matter research and education, “Design of Low Entropy Polymer Network Materials for Unique Functions”, LeNet, is launched. The LeNet is funded by JSPS Kakenhi grant-in-aided for the Promotion of Joint International Research (International Leading Research) (FY2022-FY2028).
The LeNet aims to perform world-leading interdisciplinary research and education on Soft Matter through collaboration with French team centered at ESPCI Paris (Led by Prof. Costantino Creton), US team centered at Duke University (Led by Stephen Craig). The LeNet will also collaborate with leading soft matter research networks in Europe(DoDyNet) and in US (MONET) for fostering outstanding young researchers.
This project is the development of Global Station for Soft Matter of the Global Institution for Collaborative Research and Education (GSS-GI-CoRE) (2016-2020). The Global Station for Soft Matter has been transitioned into Soft Matter Collaborative Research Unit (SMCR), Frontier Research Center for Advanced Material and Life Science, Faculty of Advanced Life Science as a GI-CoRE cooperative hub from 2021.
