Ultra-purified alginate gel combined with bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells or bone marrow aspirate concentrate regenerate intervertebral disc tissue.

A research group led by Daisuke Ukeba Clinical Fellow and Hideki Sudo specially appointed professor (Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Faculty of Medicine and Graduate School of Medicine, Hokkaido University) has confirmed that ultra-purified alginate gel combined with bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells or bone marrow aspirate concentrate regenerate intervertebral disc tissue. In addition, the mechanism of intervertebral disc regeneration and the mechanical stability have been also demonstrated. These findings were reported in EBioMedicine in 2020 and 2022, and in Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery in 2021.
