About the Faculty

Today, the developments in the field of Life Science has full of diversity. It’s not only based on studies of biochemistry within a cell or structures and functions of biological molecule, but also research related with observation and analysis of the various molecular functions and movements on a real-time basis. Study emerges as an information network and the research of the new materials get inspiration from the life phenomena. The answer for “What is Life?” is essential in the study of the fundamental theme and it can be solved by reintegrating the subdivided and highly-developed studies.

As expected, these studies lead to developments of our everyday life demands. The purpose of Transdisciplinary Science is the new developments not only in the medical and pharmaceutical field, but also the progress in materials and systems related to the interface between human, machineries and environments. All of them are crucial in upgrading our life quality.

In order to establish the global standard to lead the scientist field, it is necessary to promote researcher as a new type of scientist who is capable to unite and beyond the existing disciplines such as biology, chemistry and physics. Also it is important to educate young researchers in such an interdisciplinary vision. To accomplish these aims, the Faculty of Advanced Life Science was established as a transdisciplinary institution consisting on professionals from a wide range of research fields. Furthermore, we take steps both in education and research in a long-term scope. Faculty of Advanced Life Science takes the responsibility on directing the Division of Life Science, Transcisciplinary Life Science Course and Division of Soft Matter at Graduate School of Life Science as graduate curriculum, and Division of Macromolecular Functions, Department of Biological Sciences at School of Science as undergraduate curriculum.

Considering of the way of promoting the research, especially for the research theme in advance stage at the Frontier Research Center for Post-genome Science and Technology, carries active business-academia collaboration and accelerate the research that utilize external funding.
Our Faculty carries out our scientific research and educational activities under the Medium Term Goals and Plans for 2016-2021 from medium to long-term viewpoint

Department of Advanced Transdisciplinary Sciences

We investigate mechanisms for forming hierarchical structures of cells and tissues, and correlations between the hierarchical structures and high order functions of living organisms. For this purpose, we study the relationship between the structure and function of biofunctional molecules, such as proteins and proteoglycans. We investigate the effect of interactions between various biofunctional molecules in vivo on the mechanism for forming the hierarchical structure of living organisms, such as morphogenesis and development. In addition, we establish the novel methodology of regenerative medicines thorough the development of novel biomaterials to regulate morphogenesis of cells.

Department of Functional Life Sciences

Complex biological processes, such as morphogenesis and development, are regulated by the molecular mechanism of biofunctional molecules based on the genomic information and by the signal transduction thorough the expression of bioinformational molecules. We try to understand the complex biological processes through the systematic investigate of the complex biological systems related to the biofunctional molecules and bioinformational molecules by means of information sciences and analytical sciences. On the other hand, it is important to study the complex biological processes to understand the natural immune systems and to find the novel target of new medicines. Furthermore, we establish the methodology to investigate the interactions between the biofuctional molecules in live cells and tissues.
