Overview of Research
Carbohydrates (sugar chains) are indispensable to living matter not only as essential energy sources but also as signal molecules of intra- and intercellular systems. Our interests are focused on glycotechnology to elucidate and utilize the function of carbohydrates as signal molecules, and on chemical biology towards a new age of medicinal science.
To achieve these targets, we are developing innovative synthetic methods and structural&functional analytical methods for glycoconjugates such as glycopeptides, glycolipids, and oligosaccharides. Development of probing systems using these glycoconjugates is also in progress to elucidate and apply the functions of glycans in living matter.
Inhibitors of glycosidases and glycosyltransferases are also an exciting research area. Development of ultra-rapid glycotyping technologies “Glycotyping” is in progress.
