Overview of Research and Education
Sphingolipids are a class of lipids containing backbone of long-chain bases, and characterized by various molecules of ceramides, sphingomyelin, and glycosphingolipids. Sphingolipids are a major component of membrane lipids of cells together with glycerophospholipids and cholesterols. In addition, sphingosine-1-phosphate is known to be a signal-transducing molecule in sphingolipids. In our laboratory, we have studied biological mechanism of sphingolipids for epidermal barrier, itch nerve extension, and disease-related functions of sphingolipids for diseases such as Altzheimer’s disease (AD) and metabolic syndrome. We are also trying a developmental study of an advanced material from sphingolipids.
