History

1959 Department of Polymer Science is established in School of Science.
  Course of Polymer Science I (later Polymer Solid-State Physics) is formed.
1960 Courses of Polymer Science II (later Polymer Physical Chemistry) and
  Polymer Science III (later Polymer Solution Physics) are added to Department of Polymer Science.
1961 Course of Polymer Science IV (later Polymer Chemistry) is added to Department of Polymer Science.
1962 Course of Polymer Science V (later Biopolymer Science) is added to Department of Polymer Science.
1963 Department of Polymer Science is created in Graduate School of Science.
1993 Departments of Botany, Zoology and Polymer Science in Graduate School are reorganized into Department of Biological Sciences in Graduate School of Science.
  Departments of Biology and Polymer Science are reorganized into Department of Biological Sciences comprising two divisions, Biology and Macromolecular Functions.
  Departments of Polymer Science in Graduate School are reorganized into Department of Biological Sciences consisting of two courses: Structural Bio-Macromolecular Sciences, and Bio-Macromolecular Chemistry.
  Department of Biological Sciences (Macromolecular Functions) is established in School of Science.
  Two large courses : Structural Bio-Macromolecular Sciences, and Bio-Macromolecular Chemistry are reorganized to consist of six courses:

2003 Division of Basic Industrial Biological Science (a collaborative division) is established in Department of Biological Science, Graduate School.
  Endowed Divisions of Glyco-Fine Chemistry, Computational Molecular Biological Science and Molecular Bionomy-Shionogi are established in Department of Biological Science, Graducate School.
2004 National University Corporation Hokkaido University
2006 Faculty of Advanced Life Science and Graduate School of Life Science is established. Graduate School of Science is reorganized into “Graduate School of Science” and “Faculty of Science” which includes Division of Transdisciplinary Life Science, Department of Biological Sciences.
  Frontier Research Center for Post-genome Science and Technology affiliated with Faculty of Advanced Life Science is created.
  Division of Life Science, Graduate School of Life Science is divided into three courses consisting of Bio-information and Molecular Science, Biosystems Science, and Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Science. (Graduate education is provided by multiple departments including Faculty of Advanced Life Science, Science, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Agriculture.)
2008 (Cooperative Education) Frontier Biomaterials Science in the doctoral program started in the Bio-information and Molecular Science course of graduate school of life science (National Institute for Materials Science Biomaterials Center).
2010 Faculty of Advanced Life Science is reorganized and divided into two divisions consisting of Advanced Transdisciplinary Sciences and Functional Life Science (Division of Transdisciplinary Life Science, Department of Life Science, Faculty of Science is integrated.) Department of Biological Sciences in Faculty of Science moves to Faculty of Advanced Life Science.

2011 (Collaborative field) Molecular delivery Science started in the Faculty of Advanced Life Science.
2012  Administration Office, Faculty of Advanced Life Science
2016 Frontier Research Center for Post-genome Science and Technology affiliated with Faculty of Advanced Life Science is reorganized to Frontier Research Center for Advanced Material and Life Science.
  Global Station for Soft Matter (GSS) organized by Global Institution for Collaborative Research and Education, GI-CoRE, was established.
  Lipid Biofunction section which is organized by Academia-industry collaboration unit, HU was established in the Faculty of Advanced Life Science .
2018 Division of Soft Matter is established in the Graduate School of Life Science.
  (Cooperative Education) Functional Soft Matter Science started in the Division of Soft Matter (NIMS).
